DE-
FRAG-
MENT-
TATION

Photography & Illustration

Photography these days is digital and is stored on hard-drives. Therefore the memory is stored both in our minds and then digitally.

When a hard-drive is effected my memory it slows and becomes unresponsive over time, much like human memories. The way to try repair the drive is to reorganise data or repair broken data through the process of de-fragmentation. If only we could de-fragment human minds to regain so much of what is lost or to reorganise memories for a clearer image of what has passed.

The images in this book were taken using 35mm Film, Dark room printed material and Polaroids, which are physical and created with a physical process which are then transfered to digital and then de- fragmented by reducing to the simple elements of code. Then interpreted through sound and text and then transfered back into images. The de-fragmented image is smaller in size and much of what is deemed to be non important information is gone to provide a clearer image of the memory in a re-organised and ef cient manner.

his process allows to reinterpret the images and de-fragment parts of my own memory. Having selected a certain time frame and de-fragmented the images, with no concern for the nal image’s appearance.
